Make Custom iPhone Ringtones for Free

So you bought an iPhone. You love the phone and all its features, but wish you didn't have to pay for your songs twice to get a ringtone. There are plenty of songs in your music library, but no way to make ringtones from any of them. Or is there? Actually, with a little bit of trickery (nothing illegal), you can create ringtones from any one of your non-DRM songs in your iTunes library easily and for free. This works on both Mac and Windows PCs.

*Please note: There may be differences among all the possible combinations of iTunes versions and operating system versions (see Tips for a way to work around the syncing issues).

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

iTunes
Mac or Windows computer
Non-DRM song (i.e., one not bought from the iTunes Store)

Open iTunes.

Find the song that you want to make into a ringtone.

Listen to the song and find the part of it you want to use. The chorus may be a good place to start.

Write down the start and stop times of the clip.

Right-click the song and select "Get Info."

Click the "Options" tab.

Type in the start time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Start Time" in the minutes:seconds (i.e., 2:01) format.

Type in the end time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Stop Time." Make sure the ringtone is no more than 40 seconds long.

Click "OK."

Right-click your song again and select "Convert Selection to AAC." Wait for iTunes to convert your song. It will create a duplicate version.

I just recently picked up comcast and their dvr and am learning all kinds of great stuff. For example, here is the procedure to program 30 second skip to the remote.

1) Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode.
2) Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
3) Type in the code 994. The "Cable" button will blink twice
4) Press (do not hold) the "Setup" button
5) Type in the code 00173 (for 30 second Skip)
6) Press whatever button you want to map the skip

SATA hard drives have become more and more appreciated tending to substitute the IDE drives due to the increasing speed they offer. Motherboard manufacturers started to implement the new standard years ago, when the technology was young and expensive. Now, as the SATA HDD prices have lowered to a level where anybody can afford to choose a SATA enabled HDD instead of an IDE one, a great migration has been observed among the common computer users.

They choose to install Windows and applications on SATA drives because they provide more speed which determines the system to run smoother. Thus, for those owning older mainboards with SATA support an extra step is required while attempting to install Windows XP. Windows XP does not provide drivers for all the SATA controllers, therefore, during the installation procedure, the user must insert a floppy with the drivers that came in the package along with the motherboard.

Not a big deal, not much effort, but the funny thing is that a great number of people passed on their floppy drives. Under these circumstances, no floppy means the impossibility to install Windows XP on SATA (on some mainboards). The result? The installation guide simply won't detect the SATA HDD.

People that were happy they got rid of the old removable drive have now motives to worry. Some may reconsider buying new floppy drives for their computers. Even if I wrote in a precedent article about the utility of the floppy drive, I do not encourage spending your money buying back an obsolete piece of hardware. I will present you a method to avoid this inconvenient by doing a software trick.

Let's take it slow. Where is the problem? We have a driver problem strictly because the SATA driver we need does not come embedded in the Windows XP installation package. What if we add the driver by ourselves before installing Windows?

What ingredients are involved in this operation? The original Windows XP Installation CD, a freeware application named NLiteand a blank CD. Moreover, we need the drivers for the SATA controller provided by the manufacturer. In case you did not find any floppy inside the motherboard package or you cannot locate them on the mainboard

installation CD, you can consult the manufacturer's website to download the latest versions. To do the trick I have been talking about, it is assumed that you already have a Windows installed on an IDE drive. In case you don't, pay a visit to a friend and ask him to let you use his computer. It won't take too much time, I guarantee.

So, download the drivers and unzip them (in case they come archived) in a desired location. Then download and install the Nlite application. When you start the Nlite application, you will be asked to provide the location for the Windows installation package. Insert the genuine Windows Installation CD into the CD drive and, inside the application, select the CD drive letter.

To insert the SATA drivers within the installation package, you need to have it saved on the HDD. Hence, when the warning window appears click OK and select the destination folder for the files to be saved. Make sure that the destination partition / HDD has enough space to store the contents of the installation CD.

I tested a Windows XP Home Edition and it seems that it required about 566 MB. Immediately after you have chosen the destination folder, the application will start copying the Windows installation files. When finished, it will display some version information regarding the newly copied Windows Installation Package.

Now, click next twice until you get to a screen where you get options sorted in 4 categories: Integrate, Remove, Setup, Create. We are interested in the integration procedure, therefore select the Drivers button and click next. From the next menu window, click Insert and select multiple drive folder option from the drop down menu. This option permits you to browse to the location where the downloaded drivers are found.

Select the containing directory and click next. You will get a list with the available drivers (in case there are more than one) or simply one driver. Select it (them) and click next. Now the application will ask for the permission to start the integration procedure. Choose Yes and wait for the drivers to be inserted into the installation package.

With problematic driver being included in the installation package you can install Windows XP on your SATA HDD...but...the installation package is on the HDD. You need a bootable CD in order to start an installation. Don't worry, once the installation package has been adorned with additional user selected drivers it can be transformed into a bootable disk image and later burned on a CD. To encapsulate the installation into a ISO image use the same Nlite application.

Open it, make sure the HDD installation folder is selected and click next. Select "Last session" preset and click next again. Now from the options menu choose Bootable ISO and click next. In the following window, make sure that the mode is set to "Create Image" and click Make ISO. A destination folder is required where the resulting ISO image will be saved. Once the image saving process finished you have the freedom to burn it on a blank CD with whatever you favorite CD burner software may be.

The new CD will be the twin copy of the Windows Installation CD but with one difference, it includes the SATA driver.

Moving Application Data to different Folder

1) Make sure first you close all the programms running
2) Copy the files to where you like them to be
3) One of the places you have to change the path is for AppData under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Microsoft->Windows->Current Version->Explorer->User Shell Folders

4) Also do a search in RegEdit for the original location and replace it with new location
5) Delete the files from original location

To change most shell folder locations immediately and move the contents, right-click the shell folder in Windows Explorer, drag the folder to the new location, release the mouse button, and select the Move Here item. The shell folder locations are in the Registry at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders and/or in \Shell Folders. Edit the key in User Shell Folders if present. If not, edit the key in Shell Folders. There is no need to edit both keys if both keys are present.

Changing these keys will change the shell folder location but will not move contents. The Administrative Tools and My Video shell folders are located at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and are not present in User Shell Folders.

Recent (My Recent Documents) cannot be moved in Windows Explorer, but must be moved in the registry. It is best to leave the Local Settings shell folders alone or change the location in the registry at User Shell Folders. The Temporary Internet Files can be moved in the Internet Options control panel.

The following shared shell folders are located in the All Users profile and are in the Registry at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders or \Shell Folders. These shell folders are available to any user, but are not network shared. The path is %ALLUSERSPROFILE% and is "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users" by default. Some of these common folders may be moved in Windows Explorer.

Probably the easiest way to approach moving shell folders is to try to move the folder in Windows Explorer. If that doesn't work, then try TweakUI and if it isn't available in TweakUI, then edit the appropriate registry key. Don't forget to move the contents manually if you use TweakUI or the registry to change the location.

Windows Explorer puts special labels on the "My Documents" folder for each user account. For example, if an account full-name is "Marion Robertson" as displayed on the Welcome Screen, the My Documents folder is labeled "Marion Robertson's Documents".

The path for each "My Documents" folder is controlled by account-named keys in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths. Windows Explorer also special-labels the account Recent folder to "My Recent Documents", but I have been unable to find the registry key that controls this behavior in order to restore this special status to Recent folders that have lost the magic.

Remembering the Shell Folder locations

If you move your user shell folders, you should save the registry keys in case you need to re-do the changes after a reinstall. The following commands can be used to save these changes to .reg files that can be right-clicked and "merged" into the registry after a reinstall. The following command will backup the current account user shell folders:

C:\>reg "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" UserShellFolders.reg

and to backup the common shell folder locations:

C:\>reg "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" CommonShellFolders.reg

After a re-install, your user shell folders will be in their default location and empty. You need only merge these .reg files to repoint the shell folders to the location where the files are. No files are moved, nor need to be moved.

Taking Ownership of Folders after a re-install

When you reinstall XP, new accounts are created and you may need to "take ownership" of the old shell folders with the new account(s). This is another KWE help file and more information is available in the XP Help and Support Center. You may need to take ownership of your shell folders before you can access the files.

Risks:
1. Shawn is known to get violent with a bat/club. In a limited indoor location, the ping pong bat could be lethal in his hand, esp if playing doubles. His partner needs to check his health insurance, and if not covered, jack it up for 2008.

1. 5 year old Rajan wants to watch the ping pong match, and then roll his car on the table in the middle of a rally.

Zhou en Lai & Nehru: what went wrong?

The 40th death anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru falls on May 27. K R N Swamy recollects the relationship between Nehru and the Chinese Prime Minister Zhou en Lai.

Historians agree that the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India was hastened by the Chinese defeat of India in 1962 and the way Zhou en Lai, the Prime Minister of China outwitted him. Nehru had planned for a friendly India-China, with an open border between the two nations like USA and Canada, so that the saved defence expenses could be diverted to nation-building activities. But Zhou had no such inhibitions and practiced real politick that of cutting down India to size.

Archives state that in August 1939, when Nehru visited China as a delegate of the Congress party and met many political leaders, Zhou in the opposition as a Communist leader was anxious to confer with him. But due to the breakout of the Second World War Nehru had to return to India cutting short the visit and it was 15 years later in 1954 that they could meet. One historian feels if these two emerging leaders of Asia had met in 1939. they might have developed a camaraderie, it would have helped them resolve matters that arose when they became prime ministers. In 1947 Nehru took over as the Prime Minister of India and Zhou became his counterpart in China in 1949.

In 1954, Chou En Lai arrived in New Delhi and an official banquet was arranged for him. It was during this visit that the famous Panch Sheel Doctrine - five principles of peaceful co-existence was formulated. There seems to have been a desultory mention of the border problems - "incorrect maps" as the Chinese called them. Two years earlier in 1952, the Indian Army had warned that the Chinese were building a road in Indian territory of Aksaichin. Unfortunately the implications were lost on Nehru. Once they built the road, the Chinese became truculent and began to talk of borders imposed by "British Imperialists".

Then came the Bandung Conference of Non-aligned Nations in 1955. It was to be China's first foray into international politics. Nehru, ebullient that history was in the making, as India and China were entering the world forum as friends, introduced Zhou to other leaders. As one commentator remarks "Both Zhou and Nehru were well educated statesmen from the upper class, both had swung around to a radical view of politics. They were the aristocrats, sophisticates and internationalists in political parties which had been led by those far more earthy and anchored characters - Mahatma Gandhi and Mao. Nehru was nine years older than Zhou and "naturally he felt like an elder brother to him."

Historians aver that these sentiments were wasted, as Zhou felt offended at Bandung, as if a new boy was being introduced to his classmates. India and China were called the twin pillars of Bandung Conference, but Nehru had not realised how much India was being undermined by Zhou. In 1955 Nehru paid a State visit to China and came back hurt at the patronising attitude taken by Mao, Zhou and other Chinese leaders towards India. Meanwhile the Chinese incursions into India continued and in 1956, when Chou visited India, Zhou seems to have had an idea that he could tell Nehru that China would accept the Macmahon line as the border in North East India in return for the Aksaichin plateau. But the Indian public opinion indicated to Nehru, that there could not be any real parity until India regained the territory taken by China.

The first armed clash between India and China took place in Longju in the Ladakh in 1959. Meanwhile the asylum given by India to the Dalai Lama put an end to any hopes of reconciliation, although another effort towards mending fences led to Zhou's visit to India in 1960. Arriving at the Indian Prime Minister's residence, Zhou claims that he was shocked to see Nehru's daughter Indira Gandhi welcoming him, herself clad in a Tibetan dress. Zhou felt that it was a deliberate attempt to offend him. His attempts to convince other prominent Indians of the rightness of China's demands ended in failure. In fact Zhou walked out of the meeting with Morarji Desai.

Then came the Chinese victory over India in 1962, and the unilateral withdrawal of Chinese forces to the pre-war borders (except in Aksaichin). In Chinese political circles the opinion was that, China as a mighty nation could afford to be forgiving to a smaller country like India and Chinese newspapers compared Nehru to the mythical Burmese warrior Mon On, who attacked China seven times and was every time, captured, pardoned and released to go back to his own country, until overcame by remorse at attacking such a magnanimous neighbour, Mon On turned to be a grateful vassal.

But Zhou seem to have been dismayed at the pro-India attitude shown by some of the important Non Aligned nations, especially Nasser - the Egyptian Prime Minister and Habib Bourguiba - the Tunisian President, who berated him openly in a diplomatic function in Tunis for attacking India!

In January 1963, Zhou's verbal message to Nehru, through the Indian Ambassador to China P K Bannerjee that "war has never solved any problem. The need is to search for peace and for understanding. I do understand Mr Nehru's difficulties, but he must also try to understand my difficulties", elicited no reply from Nehru.

In April 1963 the eminent Chinese journalist Han Suyin met Nehru and told him, "Zhou holds you in high esteem." Nehru told her, "I have had enough of Zhou's friendship." Going back to China, Han Suyin met the Chinese Prime Minister and told him "I think Nehru is ill. He is imprecise in speech." Zhou scathingly replied "he has been saying imprecise things for a long time."

The Mandarin had no further use of the Pandit.
